Tutoring

More than 24,000 students enrolled in Massachusetts public schools are identified as homeless.

Our Tutoring Program is designed to foster the academic, social and emotional growth of students impacted by homelessness and poverty. We match volunteers with a student or group of students to help with homework and school projects.

Tutoring at a Glance

  • Volunteer Tutors come from a variety of backgrounds and range in age from young adults to retirees.

  • Tutors are paired with one student

(Pre-K – 12) and meet either once or twice a week for an hour-long session.

  • In addition to homework help and school projects, tutors may opt to assist with GED and HiSET exam preparation.

  • The tutoring calendar follows the public school year and runs during early evening hours from Monday – Thursday. We also provide summer learning during July and August.

  • We provide free training and professional development workshops throughout the year.

  • Students interested in tutoring who are under 18 may do so with the written consent of a parent or guardian. Those under 16 may tutor with a parent or guardian present at all times.

Resources

Read Along Stories

A list of read-along stories young children can follow during tutoring. Arts and crafts, games and interactive storybooks are also available in the tutoring resource cabinets at each site.

Cancellations

In the case of inclement weather, we automatically will cancel tutoring when schools are closed in the towns where our sites are located. We may also choose to cancel tutoring if we feel that it is not safe or reasonable to ask tutors to come in.
