This article is a follow-up to a previous article outlining the HH Richardson School's 3rd Grade Community Service project. It turns out that the students ended up collecting 1,350 books during their recent book drive for the School on Wheels "Summer Reading Bag Project" !
School on Wheels of Massachusetts hosted our 2013 Family Game Nights over the April Vacation week. Families were invited to come and play a variety of educational games. At the end of the night, each family was given a new game to take back to their living space. To make this possible, School on Wheels conducted a Game Drive. Our community rose to the occasion donating over 360 brand new games for the families living in three of the temporary housing motels in Brockton. Donations came from individuals, schools, organizations and various groups, such as the employees of Crescent Credit Union. The Village Toy Shop in Easton had offered a 20% discount for games purchased for our drive, in addition to their own generous donation of games.
Our families enjoyed the activities very much. The students really enjoyed playing the games with their families and with the SOWMA volunteers. They were very excited to be able to take the games back with them, too. One young boy came running over to one of the tutors to ask "Is this game really for me to take?" He hugged his box tightly and ran back to his mom to report that, yes, the game was for him to take with them to play as a family. Our volunteers also enjoyed the activities quite a bit. The just loved getting to play games with the kids and have some time to talk with and get to know the families.
More than 540 runners and walkers opened their wallets and left their footprints on the trails of Borderland to support School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA) at the Outrunning Homelessness Race & Fun Walk sponsored by Crescent Credit Union on Saturday, April 27. The fundraiser was held at DCR’s Borderland State Park for its 2nd year in a row and raised over $27,000.
The third grade students at the F.L. Olmsted and H.H. Richardson Schools in Easton are holding a book drive to benefit School on Wheels. The third graders worked to get the word out with posters and they have asked for donations. Over 600 books have already been collected and the project is not yet over. Their goal is to raise over 1,000 books! On Wednesday, February 13, 2013 students in Mr. Higgins' class (with some siblings from fourth and fifth grade) visited with School on Wheels of Massachusetts.

In February of this year, School on Wheels’ Systems Manager, Marie, led a playwriting workshop for middle school students at one of our busiest sites. Four students took part in this two-day workshop, held during regular tutoring hours during winter break.
