The Challenge: Be the OtterBox division to raise the most money in one month in support of a non-profit organization and the OtterCares Foundation would match the funds with a 100% match. The first step was to decide which non-profit to support. Emily Panetsos and Drew Hovanec, two young professionals, from the Canton office took the lead and started researching nonprofits online to find an organization that met the criteria they had set up. The non-profit had to support innovation and education with an entrepreneurial spirit. They narrowed their choices to 4 worthy agencies and the employees voted. The tipping point for choosing School on Wheels of Massachusetts was this organization supports children in their community  impacted by homelessness. Knowing that the students they would be helping could live right in their own backyard swayed the OtterBox Boston team to choose SOWMA for their Company Challenge. In less than a month 15 employees raised a total of $5,200 to help our kids!

The Rodman Ride For Kids is an umbrella matching gift charity raising funds for youth-focused social service agencies that support at-risk children in Massachusetts. The Ride serves as a catalyst by providing child welfare agencies an opportunity to raise funds through this event. The Ride For Kids and its affiliated charities fundraise year-round, culminating with the Ride event, when 1,500 cyclists participate in a 25, 50, or 100-mile non-competitive cycling tour. The expenses associated with the Ride for Kids are less than 3% of the total revenue, and they are all underwritten.

Recently, we received our yearly delivery from W.B. Mason of much-needed school supplies for our students. We are extremely grateful for W.B. Mason’s generosity and continuous support of School on Wheels of Massachusetts!

Thanks to W.B. Mason, our new backpacks are filled with all of the school supplies a child needs for school. We want every student to have the resources they need to be successful in school. W. B. Mason makes this possible for hundreds of children impacted by homelessness.

During my year of AmeriCorps service at School on Wheels, I can proudly say I accomplished everything in my VISTA Assignment Description, the official list of goals every VISTA gets at the start of her year of service. The organization has successfully transitioned to a remotely-hosted tutoring database that can be accessed from any computer over the internet. This will allow us, starting in the fall, to train Site Coordinators to enter data about tutoring sessions, lessening the data-entry burden at the home office.
