Students at Bridgewater-Raynham High School held their fourth annual 5K road race on Sunday, May 15. Part of the funds raised are used to benefit the sophomore class, who organized the race. The remaining funds are gifted to a charity chosen by the race committee each spring. School on Wheels was selected for the second year in a row and received $1,500 from the event.

Gayle Arrighi, a newly retired BR physical education teacher and active volunteer for SOWMA, ignited passion for SOWMA’s mission among her students and established BR’s School on Wheels Club last year with Jill Spatola, a member of SOWMA’s Board of Directors. “It seemed like a natural fit to benefit SOWMA with the proceeds from the charity run,” said Arrighi. “We had a core group of great kids helping.” Sophomore Class President James Stove took the lead making sure people attended meetings, distributing flyers, handling the runner registrations, and promoting the race on social media. Students along with teacher/advisor Brian Bosworth, Spatola, and Arrighi solicited donations of gift certificates from local businesses to support the race. “The kids worked really hard for School on Wheels,” said Spatola. “We had students in charge of various responsibilities including check-in, raffles, kids’ arts and crafts and face painting, monitoring the finish line, and cleaning up after the race.”

Chartwells School Dining Services graciously donated bananas and bottled water for the event.

Spatola is proud of the BR students’ commitment to SOWMA and the way they’ve taken action to make a positive contribution to the education of kids in their community. “I think it is important for kids to realize how lucky they are these days,” she said. “Small efforts can not only feel good, but can help kids impacted by homelessness have the same opportunities everyone has.”
