Recently, we were thrilled to have a bunch of hard-working, friendly, fun volunteers in our stockroom. The Bridgewater State University employee volunteers helped us prepare and organize over 140 backpacks for the children in the Brockton motels and family shelters for the new school year.
All these folks came over from Bridgewater State University as part of their “Fridays of Service” program. They helped us in our continuing efforts to pack over 600 backpacks with school supplies for the students we service in local shelters, motels and other sites.
We asked Diane Bell, Director of the Community Service Center at Bridgewater State University to tell us more about the “Fridays of Service” program.
Here is what Diane had to tell us…
“In support of the University’s core values, the Community Service Center and the Office of Human Resources have joined efforts to offer “Fridays of Service.” Once a month, students, faculty and staff have the opportunity to engage in service learning while creating mentor relationships outside of the classroom. Participants have the opportunity to learn about different social issues (i.e. hunger and homelessness, poverty and education) while engaging in direct service together within our local community.”
We are grateful to Diane and the departments at Bridgewater State University for encouraging their students and employees to reach out in to their communities and make a real difference for kids in need.
