Become a Tutor/Mentor

School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA) trains community volunteers to provide tutoring and mentoring for children and young adults impacted by homelessness.  In addition to free onsite training at our East Bridgewater location, we ask tutors for a time commitment of one hour each week for the duration of the term (see below).  Mentors also receive training from SOWMA staff and support throughout the term and commit to 3 or more hours a month.

Our volunteer tutors come from all walks of life with different backgrounds and professions, yet they share one goal: to help children move beyond homelessness through a quality education.

Tutors provide consistency and stability for students and reinforce grade level learning skills, work on school projects and help boost the child’s self-esteem. Tutors serve as positive adult role models and help students realize their full potential in the classroom and beyond.

SOWMA mentors are caring adults who spend 3+ hours a month helping a high school or college student with post-secondary plans, transition and career goals.  Our mentors help build a student's self-sufficiency skills and foster confidence in pursuing educational and career goals by identifying available resources.  We ask for a time commitment of at least 3 hours a month.

Volunteer tutors and mentors are trained and supported by SOWMA staff.

  • Tutors must complete a three-hour training at our office in East Bridgewater. For more information on training, please contact Jillian at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
  • Tutors must be 18 years of age to tutor on their own. High School students can tutor with a parent or other adult they know.
